I am about to get my braces off, but the teeth are jagged. Will this get fixed with the orthodontist or do I need to go somewhere else to get this fixed? I am happy about straight teeth, but am hoping this could be fixed so I’ll have a great smile.
Emily
Dear Emily,
This is fixed with a procedure known as cosmetic contouring. It is a means of reshaping the teeth to look more esthetic and in line with a clean bite. Sometimes an orthodontist will fix this as a means of finishing out a case. That works if the case is simple. If there is anything more involved, I would arrange to have it done elsewhere. However, it would be hard for you to know whether or not the case is complicated or not. Your orthodontist may have trouble admitting the case is too challenging for him to do well.
Sometimes cosmetic bonding is needed to complete the case, which is an advanced cosmetic procedure. My suggestion would be for you to see an expert cosmetic dentist to get his or her opinion on how this would need to be treated.
It is sometimes hard to find an expert cosmetic dentist. This is because it is not a recognized specialty. Any general dentist can claim to be a cosmetic dentist regardless of the amount of training they have had. Developing real skill in cosmetic dentistry requires post-doctoral training and very few dentists invest in enough of it.
The best way to look for a skilled cosmetic dentist is to look for a dentist who is accredited with the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD). These dentists have passed stringent exams as well as demonstrated real skill and artistry on a number of cases that are judged by an examination board.
My recommendation is that you get a consultation is an AACD accredited dentist and go from there. They can assure you a beautiful result.
