I had two dental implants placed. The total procedure including bone grafting for both areas came to about $17,000. The bone grafting was done and then my dentist provided two Maryland Bridges, which were supposed to stay in place until the surgical site was ready for the next stage which would be the implants and crowns. I’ve paid for all of this ahead of time. My concern comes with the fact that my Maryland Bridges have already fallen out several times. I don’t know if this is normal for the temporary teeth, but will admit to being concerned. Should I switch dentists for the remainder of the procedure? I’m assuming I’m entitled to a partial refund on the work he hasn’t done, right? Or, is it better to stick it out with this dentist because everything needs to be done by the same person?

Dear Terrance,
I am very glad you wrote. I am going to recommend that you switch dentists. Placing dental implants is a very advanced procedure that is not adequately taught in dental school. You’ll want a dentist who has invested in post-doctoral training in dental implants. There are countless dental implant horror stories and you don’t want to be one of them. In fact, it has one of the highest number of malpractice suits in the dental field. If the teeth are visible when you smile, you’ll also want to make certain they are skilled cosmetic dentists as well so that the implant crowns will look completely natural.
I’m a bit concerned about the Maryland Bridge issue. First, it would not be the “temporary” tooth replacement I would recommend for someone, mostly because it requires changing your tooth structure in order for it to stay in. A better (and much less expensive) option would have been a dental flipper. Second, he hasn’t been able to keep the bridge in. That isn’t normal, even for temporary replacements.
So you know, your dentist is ethically obligated to provide your new dentist with all his notes, and diagnostics. You shouldn’t have to repeat anything that was already done correctly.
I will also mention that your dentist’s price is a bit on the high side, especially for someone who doesn’t seem very skilled. Make sure you get a refund on everything he did not yet do.
