I’m quite worried about my boyfriend. He says his wisdom have always hurt on and off but he’s in so much pain lately he hasn’t been eating. I finally convinced him to let me peak and his gums by where his wisdom teeth are (Kind of) are horribly swollen. The wisdom teeth are only partly out and sort of diagonal. I think he needs an emergency dentist but he wants to wait it out.
Amy I.
Dear Amy,
I’m in agreement with you. Pain is almost always a sign of a tooth infection of some kind. Whenever the pain is substantial enough to keep you from eating then you need an emergency dentist. Feel free to show him this post. Many men tend to try to tough things out. But, in this case, he’s putting his life at risk.
Your jaw is quite close to your heart and brain. It sounds like he has a substantial infection. If that spreads too far it can turn life-threatening quickly.
With you saying the wisdom teeth are coming in at an angle, that tells me they’re impacted. He’ll need to have these removed. The sooner he does it the better.
Who Should Remove His Wisdom Teeth?
Many dentists will extract wisdom teeth. You’ll want to make sure they’re also sedation dentists to make the procedure easier on your boyfriend. Be aware, he’ll need someone to stay with him after the procedure throughout the day because he’ll be loopy. If you’re able to do that for him it would be great because he’ll be comfortable having you around. The two of you can just watch some movies together, if you enjoy that sort of thing.
Some patients prefer an oral surgeon to doing in-office. That’s completely up to the patient. If your boyfriend feels that way, his dentist can give him a referral to an oral surgeon’s office. If he doesn’t have a regular dentist, the emergency dentist can do the same thing.
Make sure he knows this is important. Antibiotics aren’t enough in this situation. He’ll run through the meds and the infection will kick back in until he has these extracted.
