I keep getting adds for the Luster Premium Home Teeth Whitening Light System. It has some good reviews, but I don’t know if those are legitimate or paid reviews. Do you know if this actually works? If it does, is it safe? I’d like to get my teeth whitened, but think something I can purchase without a dentist would be more affordable.

Dear Patti,
While there are some over the counter whitening options that work, Luster Premium does not appear to be one of them. In fact, I would consider it a scam. First, the light. It doesn’t appear to do anything. I think they are putting it their for psychological reasons and to increase the perceived value of their product.
There is an additional problem with the whitening product itself. The whitening effect it has appears to come from a pigment, instead of a true whitening ingredient. The pigment in their Super Whitener is zinc oxide. This will temporarly make the teeth appear whiter. This is likely where the good reviews come from. I suspect that they wrote the review before the pigment wore off.
If you truly want white teeth, the best way to do that is through your dentist. While something like Crest Whitestrips will work, it is a lot weaker than any teeth whitening you would get through your dentist, which means you will have to purchase a whole lot of kits to get the same results that you could through your dentist in a fraction of the time. In the long run, this will not cost you less.
