I need to replace a couple of teeth in the back of my mouth. I’d like get dental implants but I do have some metal allergies. Is it possible for me to get dental implants or do I need to start looking at other options?
Melissa
Dear Melissa,
You did not say what type of metal allergies you have. Traditional dental implants are made from titanium. This particular metal is very biocompatible and has been used in various prosthetics for decades including hips and knees. It would be irresponsible to say no one is allergic to titanium, but I will say it would be an extremely rare allergy.
You have some good options here. First, you can have a traditional dental implant without too much fear. Though, if you are concerned you’d have an allergy to the titanium I am sure an allergist can test you for it ahead of time. A second option is the get a zirconia implant. These are metal-free. Not as many dentists offer them, so you may have to do some searching around.
Why Don’t More Dentists Offer Zirconia Dental Implants?
It isn’t that there is any known inferiority in the zirconia implants compared to the titanium, the bigger issue is there is not enough data on the zirconia dental implants. This is simply because they haven’t been around as long as their titanium counterparts. There will be data eventually, but as the zirconia is comparatively new it will take some time.
Zirconia is definitely strong enough to retain the implant crowns. The question is which implant fixture has the most longevity. We just need some time to pass to collect the comparative data.
In the meantime, your first order of business is the pin down what your specific metal allergy is and then decide from there. The choice of dental implants is a good one. These are the best tooth replacement options there are.
