I’m getting married! I’m beyond thrilled. I’ve decided to go all out and remake my smile, which has always been a disappointment to me. I went in for my consultation. The dentist took one look at me and said he wouldn’t do porcelain veneers for me unless I got rid of my tongue piercing. It was like he’d popped a childhood dream without even giving me a chance. Does he have that right?
Laynie – Tennessee
Laynie,
There are some downsides to having a tongue piercing. First, chips and cracks. Sometimes it happens because you misjudge your biting. Other times because people play with them and bang them against their teeth. Another problem can be shifting. If you suck on the ring, it can cause your teeth to shift. Not only can it pull them out of alignment, but if you have veneers, it can create an open margin, which puts you at risk for decay.
All that being said, it is your mouth. If you’re a candidate for porcelain veneers you should get them. Just because this dentist won’t work with you, doesn’t mean you won’t find a great cosmetic dentist who will. While some dentists will only work with the most “ideal” patient scenarios, others are just concerned with giving you the best smile possible.
