I want to get dental implants. My dentist did a bunch of tests, including a CT scan. He’s decided my sinuses are too low to move forward with the procedure and wants me to get a sinus lift and bone grafting before we go forward. Is this really necessary? Would another dentist feel the same way?

Andrew,
It’s very likely that you could find another dentist who would go forward with your dental implants procedure. The real question is should they. If your dentist did the CT scan and said your sinuses are too low, then it’s likely any dentist who does the procedure without you getting a sinus lift will also perforate your sinus cavity.
We’ve seen this many times with patients who come into our office needing to get their implant procedure repaired from a dentist who botched it. The complications, along with the ensuing repairs, are expensive. They can also be life threatening.
You have three choices. One, you could go forward with dental implants with another dentist and take your chances. Two, you could have the sinus lift. Or, three you can look into mini implants. They can’t be used on a single tooth, but do well for stabilizing a denture. Before you do that, I’d speak to someone who already has mini implants and see how they feel about them.
