I have a horrible fear of the dentist. I mean horrible, have nightmares every night kind of fear. Now, combine that with a massive toothache and I’m frozen. I haven’t been to a dentist in years. I wouldn’t even know which one to go to, but I have to do something. Any recommendations for me?

Sasha,
I’m sorry for your toothache…and the nightmares. I can assure you that you’re not alone in your fear of the dentist. I suspect you had a bad experience that soured you on dentists. What I don’t want is that negative experience to keep you from getting the treatment you need. In fact, I think you need an emergency dentist.
Toothaches are often a sign of infection. If left untreated, it will spread. And, I’m not just talking about to other teeth. It can spread throughout your body. Your mouth is close to your brain, so it can get serious.
I am taking into account your fear. Because of that, I’d like you to look for an emergency dentist that also does sedation dentistry. They’re usually more compassionate and used to working with fearful patients. Even better, you won’t have to worry about pain. The sedation procedure is pain free and will give you an appointment without pain as well. You will need someone to drive you to and from your appointment, because the sedation can make you a bit loopy.
