Perfect your pout
Your smile makeover is complete. And—because we did it—it dazzles.
Now, it’s time to show it off. What better way than to make your smile pop with a great lip color.
Or keep people guessing about what’s changed with a glossy, nude look. Perfectly complimenting your natural beauty without shouting.
Either way, you’ll need to know how to apply lipstick like a pro because whether it’s bright red or a beautiful blush or a complimentary peach, brings out your smile.
We checked with our favorite makeup artist and consulted professionals at several makeup companies. We came up with these six steps that’ll have you rocking a confident—lipsticked—smile every day.
Your guide to applying lipstick like a pro
Step 1: Exfoliate your lips.
Brush your lips with a soft-bristled toothbrush or gently rub using a damp washcloth to remove dead or rough skin cells.
Step 2: Moisturize your lips.
Massage in a small amount of face or eye moisturizer into your lips. Don’t use lip balm—the oils contained in the formula will compromise the indelibility of your products.
Step 3: Prime your lips.
Lip primer is available in a range of prices and from a variety of makeup companies. But, we find that foundation works best for locking in moisture, keeping lip color in place and maintain the integrity of the color.
Step 4: Line your lips.
Lining your lips defines the shape of your lips and keeps the lipstick from bleeding. Use your lips natural, white contour as a guide. Lining outside of your lips tends to look unnatural and sloppy instead of—as it’s usually intended—making your lips appear more full.
Use a liner that is the same shade—or as close as possible—to your lipstick.
Step 5: Power your lips.
Lightly dust your lips with translucent powder for a long-lasting lip look. Curl a cotton pad containing a tiny amount of powder around your finger. Gently roll it over your lips.
Step 6: Color your lips.
It’s finally time to apply your lipstick. Use a brush for a more even and precise application.
Apply. Blot. Apply a second coat. Blot.
