Dental Phobia
Dental phobia is defined as the fear of the dentist and/or receiving dental care. If this is you, don’t feel bad–you’re not alone! It’s estimated that as many as 75% of adults in the United States experience some degree of dental fear. About 5 to 10 percent of those are so fearful that they avoid dental care at all costs. This is dangerous, painful, and can be a huge burden.
Different tactics to combat patient anxiety have surfaced over the years, but today, the latest trend is that of the dental comfort dog. Dental offices across the United States are starting to take advantage of the healing and therapeutic qualities of dogs. It’s a simple concept, but one that works so well. For the last few months, we gave it a try and brought our own dog, Blue, to the office with us.
Blue
Blue’s name is actually Go Big Blue, in reference to the alma mater of Dr. Fred and Holly Arnold– The University of Kentucky! He was the biggest puppy of his litter and is extremely sweet and calm.
Blue is a fawn boxer, with the breed being part of the “Working Dogs” category. The Arnold family laughs at the title because as you can see– Blue has managed to go his almost 10 years of life without doing much work…until now. After we lost his mom last November, Blue became listless and despondent, so we knew something was wrong. When Holly left to go to the office one day, she heard him howling at the door and decided to take him with her. It turns out that Blue LOVES coming to the office and meeting patients. He even has his own spot in Dr. Arnold’s office and likes to sit there– unless a patient wants to say hello!
Tate
Just when you thought the office couldn’t get any cuter… Tate arrived! Dr. Arnold surprised his family with a new boxer puppy, Tate, in February. Tate is a busy boy and Blue is teaching him the ropes. They enjoy playing together– especially tug of war. While we have two crates for them, they usually like to be together in Blue’s crate. Tate is busy and interested in everything that moves– especially Blue. His big brother is his best and most patient teacher. When Tate is more thoroughly trained, he’ll make more appearances at the office. Last month, he was at our Stick Pony race at the finish line to cheer on our team!
Meet the Pups
On most days, you can find Blue wandering the office. We invite you to visit Blue at the start and finish of your appointment. He will help you feel soothed, happy, and more relaxed. If you have kids, it’s a great way to start your children out with a positive dental experience.
With the help of dogs like Tate and Blue, you have an alternative to IV sedation or nitrous oxide to help and relieve your anxiety at the dentist. Additionally, they’ll put a smile on your face– guaranteed!
If you have a fear of dogs, are allergic, or have any other issues, just inform us and we’ll be sure to keep the office a dog-free zone for your appointment. If it’s been over six months since your last appointment– make one today. Tate and Blue can’t wait to meet you!
Ever since he was little Dr. J. Fred Arnold wanted to be a dentist. He has lived in Kentucky all of his life, except for three years he spent serving in the Air Force (1984-1987). He and his wife Holly have raised their family here and couldn’t imagine spending life anywhere else. They love the great schools and the emphasis on arts and culture.
