I need to have some wisdom teeth extracted and I wanted to know if it is safe to have it done by my dentist or should I see an oral surgeon? My big problem is I’m a dental coward and pretty afraid even under the best of circumstances. My dentist said he can use sedation, but the oral surgeon said it would be safer if I used an oral surgeon that dentists aren’t as qualified. I like my dentist, but don’t want to do something foolish.

Dear Katie,
This issue came up a few years ago when oral dentists tried to get a monopoly on dental sedation. It isn’t a matter of qualifications or safety. It was more a political move where oral surgeons wanted to have a monopoly on wisdom tooth extractions. If your dentist offers sedation, then he has gone through the requisite training and you will be perfectly safe.
Given the level of anxiety you have, I would make sure your dentist offers oral conscious sedation and not just nitrous oxide. That is the better option for you. It is administered by a pill, however, it is so strong you will need someone to drive you to and from your appointment, as well as to stay with you for the remainder of the day until you are lucid again. I’d plan on a nice nap and Netflix binge.
You didn’t mention your age, but somewhere between the ages of 17 and your early 20s are the best times to have your wisdom teeth removed.
One great thing about dental sedation is it changes the lives of those who have struggled with dental anxiety for their entire lives.
